Media Movie Review Assignment on China Town (Movie Review Sample) Content: NameTutorCourseDateChinatown MoviesThe China town film is set in 1937 in the city of Los Angels.it involves a hired private investigator named Jake Gittes who is to watch and spy on Hollis Mulwray who was the citys chief water engineer. Glittes is hired by Evelyn, a woman who claims to be a wife to Mulwray. Hollis on the other hand spend much of his time in water runoff and dry river bed investigations. Glittes eventually catches Hollis with a young lady and then takes them a photograph, which later became a scandal in the news. Glites eventually learns that the woman who hired her was not the wife to Hollis. Evelyn seeing the matter is out of hand visits Jakes in his office and threatens to sue him for defamation. In the movie, people suspect the city department government of perpetual scandal. In spite of drought and new proposals to build a dam, the department of water and power purposely releases fresh water into the ocean during the night. Hollis being the enginee r opposes the dam construction claiming that it could be disastrous due to weak geological formation of rocks, though he had previously proposed another dam construction that failed due to the same geological reasons. Mulwray Hollis due to his stand faces great opposition and ridicule from the farmers who want the dam to be constructed so that they can get water.Jake eventually goes to Hollis house in order to speak to him but only finds Evelyn. Evelyn talks to him and tells him that Mulwrays may be at the reservoir since he usually takes afternoon walk there. Glittes eventually goes to look for Hollis where he was instructed he could find him but instead, only find the policemen there with the dead body of Hollis, which was retrieved from the pool. They were busy trying to investigate the cause of his drowning. Coincidentally the chief investigator is Lt. Escobar, who Jake used to work with while he was a policeman. Mrs. Mulwray eventually hires Jake Gittes to carry out investigati on on her husband. Gittes eventually learns that the lungs of Hollis was filled with salt water but the body was found on freshwater pool which arouses doubts about his death.Gittes eventually receives a call from Ida, the woman who feigned to be Mrs. Mulwray, who admitted that she was paid to play tricks on Jake. The woman declines to meet Jakes to spill the bins on what conspired but instead tells Jake to look at obituary column of that day. Later at water department, Gittes sees photograph of Noah Cross, a man who had quarreled with Hollis a few days before he was discovered death. But to Jakes surprise, Cross invites him for lunch and requests him to investigate on the girl Hollis was seeing that she might know about Hollis death. Jake acting on a hint that he had got, begins to investigate the fresh water supply scandal. He travels to a certain farmer to investigate how he irrigates his land but unluckily, he is shot down and beaten till he was unconscious by the farmer. Eventu ally, Evelyn comes to his rescue and he explains to her on his findings. At Evelyns house, Jake share a romantic moment with her as they lie on the bed. Evelyn tries to investigate about Jakes past as a police officer. Jake tells her that he once worked at China town as a police officer but regrets on his action that led to a woman being hurt and murdered. Then when a call rang and Evelyn talked, he hurriedly rushed and left Jake telling him to trust on him. Glittes eventually follows Evelyn and finds her with Mulwrays girlfriend who was crying. Evelyn claimed that the young woman was her sister and was crying since he had learned just learned of Hollis death in the newspaper. Later at night, Jake was called by detective Loach who tells him they should meet. When he eventually meets him, he discovers that Loach, a girl he had spoken with in the phone has been murdered. The cops tells him they suspect she was murdered since she knew the story on salt water being found in Hollis lungs . Lt. Escobar suspect that Evelyn might have been involved in Mulwrays death. When Jake confronts Evelyn to know the truth, he founds her with her incest daughter Katherine, it was then that he discovered that Cross was behind the death of Hollis. He tries to help Evelyn to escape together with her daughter but unluckily, Evelyn is shot dead by the cops as she tried to escape using his car.The dishonesty of authority figures is one of the main theme depicted in the Chinatown film. It suggest that in Chinatown getting a leader who is honest and trustworthy is almost a myth. It depicts that people in power feign their real nature of who they are. For instance, Cross uses the power of money, to control the people around him for personal gains. Also, Lt. Escobar, a man who justice is put in his hand tries all means to ensure that true justice does not prevail. Even he leads to the killing of Evelyn, an innocent woman. In China town, crime can be done so long as you hold power and corrup tion seems to be the order of the day.Another theme depicted is the helplessness of less influential people in the face of evil. In Chinatown, a common person is so hard escape injustices, especially the evil of corruption. Corruption seemed widespread almost everywhere. For instance, Jake admits to have lost a woman years back while in Chinatown due to the forces of prevailing evils. He again loses Evelyn due to the evil that prevailed as she was shot by the cops...

Cost Push Inflation On The Prices - 1101 Words

Cost-push inflation further occurs when businesses respond to rising costs, by increasing their prices to protect profit margins. There are many reasons why costs might rise. Some of these reasons are: ïÆ' ¼ Component costs: e.g. an increase in the prices of raw materials and components. This might be because of a rise in global commodity prices such as oil, gas copper and agricultural products used in food processing – a good recent example is the surge in the world price of wheat. ïÆ' ¼ A fall in the exchange rate – this can cause cost push inflation because it normally leads to an increase in the prices of imported products. For example during 2007-08 the pound fell heavily against the Euro leading to a jump in the prices of imported materials from Euro Zone countries. Cost-push inflation can be illustrated by an inward shift of the short run aggregate supply curve. The fall in SRAS causes a contraction of GDP together with a rise in the level of prices. One of the risks of cost-push inflation is that it can lead to stagflation. Important note: Many of the causes of cost-push inflation come from external economic shocks – e.g. unexpected volatility in the prices of internationally traded commodities and large-scale movements in variables such as the exchange rate. A country can also import cost-push inflation from another country that is suffering from rising inflation of its own. ïÆ'Ëœ Demand-pull Inflation This is a kind of inflation which is as a result of a persistent increase inShow MoreRelated The Causes of Inflation Essay1116 Words   |  5 PagesCauses of Inflation There are three major causes of inflation: 1. They also had to demand that white women share power with them and affirm diversity, and fight the misogynist tendencies of Black organizations (Burns). Price: The new product that the company is aiming to introduce will be charged a high price compared to its previous grocery items. Voltaire Essays - Voltaire, Age Of Enlightenment, Philosophes

Voltaire Francois Marie Arouet (pen name Voltaire) was born on November 21, 1694 in Paris. Voltaire's style, wit, intelligence and keen sense of justice made him one of France's greatest writers and philosophers. Young Francois Marie received an excellent education at a Jesuit school. He left school at 16 and soon formed friendships with a group of sophisticated Parisian aristocrats. Paris society sought his company for his cleverness, humor and remarkable ability to write verse. In 1717 he was arrested for writing a series of satirical verses ridiculing the French government, and was imprisoned in the Bastille. During his eleven months in prison he wrote his first major play, "Oedipe," which achieved great success in 1718. He adopted his pen name "Voltaire" the same year. In 1726 Voltaire insulted a powerful young nobleman and was given two options: imprisonment or exile. He chose exile and from 1726 to 1729 lived in England. While in England Voltaire was attracted to the philosophy of John Locke and ideas of the great scientist Sir Isaac Newton. After his return to Paris he wrote a book praising English customs and institutions. The book was thought to criticize the French government and Voltaire was forced to flee Paris again. In 1759 Voltaire purchased an estate called "Ferney" near the French-Swiss border where he lived until just before of his death. Ferney soon became the intellectual capitol of Europe. Throughout his years in exile Voltaire produced a constant flow of books, plays, pamphlets, and letters. He was a voice of reason, and an outspoken critic of religious intolerance and persecution. Voltaire returned to a hero's welcome in Paris at age 83. The excitement of the trip was too much for him and he died in Paris. Because of his criticism of the church Voltaire was denied burial in church ground. He was finally buried at an abbey in Champagne. In 1791 his remains were moved to a resting place at the Pantheon in Paris. Voltaire was famous during the enlightenment for his satirical writings about major issues. He was loved by supporters of the enlightenment, but he was hated by some who didnt see the genius in his satires. He had a unique point of view on things that few could see at that time.

Death and the Movies essays

Death and the Movies essays Everyone has an opinion on where one goes when they die; film makers are no exception. Two extraordinary movies about death are, What Dreams May Come and The Sixth Sense. Both movies, where similar, offer extremely different points of view. Both movies express that people must accept the fact that they are dead. Both of these films have a great love story built into them, but only one has a happy ending. One of these movies takes place in a heaven like atmosphere, where as the other movie takes place in real life. Death is a concept that is not explainable. Movies portray death in multiple ways. In What Dreams May Come, Robin Williams plays a character that dies after his children. He is then in a place that he thinks is a dream. He is actually in a so called painting. In the Sixth Sense, Bruce Willis plays a psychiatrist who is trying to teach a little not to be terrified of everything. What he does not realize is that he is in fact dead and he scares the boy. Robins character knows he is dead but he has to familiarize himself with his new surroundings. However, Bruces character has no inkling that he is dead until the end of the movie. The Sixth Sense shows the concept of staying on Earth after one dies. The deceased either do not know that they are dead or they need to avenge their death. What Dreams May Come goes into detail about where one goes after one dies. This movie explains that every person has their own heaven where they reside. Of course, if one commits suicide, like the mother in the movie, one resides in ones own hell. Each hell is different in that the individual must face all of the fears that they have over and over again. The Sixth Sense did not show heaven or hell, just peoples spirits staying on Earth after they had died. Both of these movies have a love story built into them. In The Sixth Sense, Bruce is married when he dies. He does not realize he is dead, a...

Special Pops Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Special Pops - Research Paper Example TSBVI is a public school that is helped by the state. It provides special education that is designed especially to the specific needs of their students. The school’s vision, mission and philosophy have been discussed all throughout the paper too. The story of success of one of its students has been stated and reflected. This paper defined the meaning of special education, its importance and some of its history. Special Education Education is something that each one should have or possess. It is actually one of the treasures that no one could ever steal in one’s life. Living without education is hard. Uneducated people will somehow feel like living in a place where everything is not so sure. The only basis of their decisions will only be their experiences. Without education, explanations in one’s head are not enough. One of the keys to live a life to the full is to have an explanation for everything. However, what if the world tries to stop the pursuance of it? Wh at if circumstances get along the way? People who are with disabilities should not be boxed inside their house where they are living in a new world which is then created by their own mind. The world where they and should be belong is here. They should be part of the society where they would be provided with the similar things that a normal one has. Moreover, when it comes to education, the right to have it should be given to them. But what type of education should a student with disabilities have? It is the special education. YouDictionary.com (nod) defines special education as, â€Å"a form of learning provided to students with exceptional needs, such as students with learning disabilities or mental challenges.† Addition to that, the site also defines it as having â€Å"educational programs and practices designed for students, as handicapped or gifted students, whose mental ability, physical ability, emotional functioning, etc. requires special teaching approaches, equipmen t, or care within or outside a regular classroom.† To discuss some of its history, specialednews.com (n.d.) discussed that, â€Å"The contemporary history of special education as we know it today began after World War II. It is at this time that advocacy groups formed such as The United Cerebral Palsy Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Civil Rights Movement. These groups began to advocate universal education of all children--even those with special needs. In the 1960’s, under President Kennedy, more schools granted access to children with handicaps. With advocacy and more children who had disabilities attending schools, the Education of all Handicapped Children Act was established. Also known as Public Law 94-142, it states that the federal government will support states in â€Å"protecting the rights of, meeting the individual needs of, and improving the results for infants, toddlers, children, and youths, with disabilities and their families. PL 94-142 requires schools to provide â€Å"free, appropriate public education to students with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders.† Schools have to provide the most â€Å"least restrictive environment† possible. This is achieved through inclusion, mainstreaming, segregation, and exclusion.† In Texas, Mauro (n.d.) said that children who are three years old or older and are in need of special type of assistance in education can
